Arsenic in Michigan Well Water
Michigan Arsenic Is Real, And You Can’t See, Taste, or Smell It.

Arsenic is a naturally occurring element found in Michigan’s groundwater, especially in private wells. Because arsenic is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, most homeowners have no idea it’s present until they test their water.
In Michigan, arsenic comes from ancient bedrock and mineral deposits that dissolve into groundwater over time, not pollution, and not something you caused. Certain regions of the state show consistently elevated arsenic levels, sometimes well above what’s considered safe for drinking.
If your home uses well water, arsenic water testing is the only way to know if your water is safe.

We offer several affordable treatment options for dealing with arsenic in your well water, including whole house arsenic filtration systems and reverse osmosis units. Use the menu to learn more about arsenic in your water and your treatment options.
What is arsenic?
Arsenic is a naturally occurring element found in rocks and soil. In groundwater, it dissolves into water used by private wells. Arsenic is odorless, tasteless, and invisible, making testing essential. In drinking water, arsenic is primarily present in its inorganic form, which is the most harmful.

How common is arsenic in Michigan wells?
Arsenic in Michigan ground water is more common than most people think.
Michigan has some of the highest naturally occurring arsenic levels in groundwater in the Midwest. Studies by state agencies and the U.S. Geological Survey show elevated arsenic levels across large parts of Southeast and Mid-Michigan, especially where wells draw from certain bedrock formations .
Some Michigan wells have tested:
-
Above 10 ppb (EPA limit)
-
Over 20 ppb
-
Even exceeding 50 ppb in certain areas
Arsenic levels can vary drastically from one well to the next — even on the same road
